Safety in Practical Shooting
The fundamental safety principles every IPSC shooter should know.
Safety is the most important principle in IPSC and takes priority over everything else — from stage design to individual shooter conduct.
The four universal firearm safety rules form the basis of every shooter's behavior: treat every firearm as if it were loaded; keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to fire; keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction; and be sure of your target and what's beyond it.
In IPSC matches, competitors move only according to the Range Officer's (RO) commands, and any deviation or safety violation can result in disqualification.
Eye and ear protection is mandatory at all times on the range, and firearm handling is only permitted in designated areas such as a Safe Area.
